The story
Polo and Amir share more than a father. Their mothers, Anaya and Jaleesa, are sisters. Gator’s relationship with both women makes the boys brothers and cousins, tying two households to the same complicated history. In Cincinnati, those family connections carry love, resentment, and expectations that neither young man can easily escape.
When Polo is killed and Amir receives a ten-year prison sentence, the damage reaches every part of the family. Anaya is left grieving her son. She turns toward helping young people at risk, determined that somebody else’s child might have a different future. Jaleesa takes another direction, letting anger over loss and perceived favoritism sharpen her resentment toward her sister.
Bruzin’s opens a family saga about jealousy, responsibility, and the struggle to rebuild after choices that cannot be undone. The streets shape the pressure, but the people inside this family have to decide what they will do with the lives they still have. Start here before continuing into Bruzin’s 2.
